FAQ
Q. What is this file used for?
A. This file is offered for use by software that works with the
Windows9x/ME wnaspi32.dll (version 1) to give essentially equivalent
functionality on NT4, XP and Windows 2000 systems. The file is designed to
interface with IDE, SCSI and USB CD-ROM drives and CD-Recorders. (It may
or may not function correctly with other devices such as Tape Drives.)
Although there are other more direct methods of calling these hardware devices
on XP, this file offers the ability to quickly and easily port 9x software to
XP.
Q. Is there a need for this file?
A. Yes. NT, XP and Windows 2000 (pro and server) do not come with a
wnaspi32.dll file like Windows 9x does. In the past, this was not a
problem when Adaptec's software installed it on most machines. Now most
Adaptec software does not install it, leaving us without a pre-existing dll.
Q. Does the file need to be named wnaspi32.dll?
A. No, you can rename it. A common choice is ntaspi.dll.
Q. Are administrative privileges required?
A. Yes, a regular user does not
have sufficient permissions to access the hardware through the dll. Q. Where
should the file be saved to?
A. It should be saved in your program's folder or subfolder. Your setup program or your software
can determine whether or not there is an existing ASPI Manager on the
system. If there is, it is preferable to use the existing Manager since it
may already be accessing other devices and/or may have locked them. More
